Mikel Nieve conquers the most important stage and makes a name for Euskaltel Euskadi at the Giro d'Italia

May 22, 2011

Mike Nieve made off with the 15th stage of the Giro de Italia, the most important stage of the Italian round, which has took place between Conegliano and Gardeccia, Val di Fassa a distance of 229 km. in which the rider from the team sponsored by Orbea give us a master class in cycling on his Orbea Orca on the climb up the Val di Fassa, which he undertook alone.

Taking part for the first time in a giro, and about to turn 27 years old -May26 -, Mikel Nieve won what is considered the hardest stage of the race, with five mountain passes, completing a spectacular job by Euskaltel Euskadi who managed to take the second victory of their history in the Italian round after that achieved yesterday by Igor Antón on the peak of the Zoncolan.

Nieve, who covered the course in 7h.27 '14 ", with the Italian Stefano Garzelli (Acqua &Sapone) second at 1'41" and Alberto Contador (Saxo Bank) third at 1'50 ", entered into an 18 unit escape at Km 50, which gave him a lead of more than ten minutes from the peloton. Another Euskaltel Euskadi rider also slipped into this escape: Javier Aramendía.

Another dream fulfilled

On the way over the Marmolada, at 27 km. from the finish and with the final climb ahead, Garzelli was in from, being chased by Mikel Nieve, with a seven-minute advantage over the Contador group. Nieve caught up with Garzelli on the climb up to the last port, at 6 km. from the finish and immediately attacked to take the crown solo hence achieving a second stage in a big race, the first was in the Vuelta, and entering alongside Igor Antón in the history books of the Giro and Euskaltel Euskadi.

Nieve, who made his professional debut atop Cotobello Asturias in the 2010 Vuelta, has fulfilled another of his dreams, though not without a struggle. "I fulfilled a dream, I didn´t imagine when I went professional that I would be able to achieve this. It was without doubt the hardest day of my career ... the stage was eternal "confessed the rider from Leitza, which was too weak to lift his arms at the finish line.

The rider from the team sponsored by Orbea obtained another award, climbing up to fifth place overall, at 7'03 "ahead of Rujano, Menchov, Kreuziger, Purito Rodriguez, Arroyo and Igor Antón, 11th at 9’37”
