Åsa Lundström, fifth in Ironman Melbourne!

2014-03-23

On the men’s side, Courtney Atkinson did a great job too, finishing 17th in Australia.

Åsa Lundström was a top-five finisher at Ironman Melbourne, racing very well in a complicated course. It was a much contested race, the outcome being decided in the marathon. The title went to Caroline Steffen, from Switzerland. With this amounts of points Åsa has it close to Kona!

With lots of big names, the men’s race promised to be a fierce fight for the top spots. And it lived up to expectations, for there was never a clear ruler throughout. In the end, it was Luxembourg’s Dirk Bockel who won to lead one of the hottest top fives in the event’s living memory. Courtney Atkinson – who was racing at home – put up a remarkable performance and finished within the top 20 (17th, actually).

Meanwhile, only 2 seconds separated Matt Sharp from the top ten at New Plymouth ITU Triathlon World Cup Matt Sharp. He had to be content with the 12th place in an event purely dominated by Spanish triathletes. Mario Mola claimed victory, while Javier Gómez Noya did not manage to snatch gold from his compatriot and had to put up with silver.

As to women’s results, American triathlete Katie Hursey was the fastest in New Zealand. Tamara Gómez set off to a great start, emerging from the water only 42” behind the leader. The race unfolded in tough conditions, though, and she was reeled in, finishing 32nd.
