Åsa Lundström lands 17th at Ironman Hawaii

2014-10-12

The Swedish triathlete managed to squeeze into the World Championship top 20 in her debut in Kona. Unfortunately, Andrew Starykowicz had to drop out of the race after T2.

This has been the first Ironman Hawaii for Åsa Lundström. She rubbed shoulders with the best triathletes on Earth finishing 17th – a great spot, indeed.

After landing third at Ironman Cairns, Lundström earned the points she needed to get the ticket to the World Championship in Kona. The hot, wet weather and the strong wind marked the 4km swim, the 180km bike ride and the 42km marathon. The Swedish triathlete gave it everything to complete the race, and she did in 9 hours, 36 minutes and 22 seconds. The winner was Australian Mirinda Carfrae, who defended her title in 9 hours and 56 seconds.

On the men’s side, Andrew Starykowicz had to quit as he was suffering from some physical problems that had seemingly gone. It was a pity, because the American triathlete was biking solo on the front at the Km 100 mark. The winner was Orca-sponsored Sebastian Kienle, from Germany, who not only grabbed the leading position from Starykowicz but also built a gap that kept everybody else far from the gold medal.
