Atkinson beats Pete Jacobs and wins Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines

2013-08-04

The Orbea-sponsored athlete broke three-time Ironman Philippines champion -and current Ironman World Champion- Pete Jacobs’s winning streak and took the race after building up a sizeable lead on the bike.

Australia’s Courtney Atkinson has lifted another well-deserved title, this time at Cobra Energy Drink Ironman 70.3 Philippines, after leading the race throughout.

Held in Cebu, in the heart of the Philippines, the event attracted as many as 1,800 athletes, who had to face a 1.9km swim, a 90km bike ride and a 21.1km run.

Atkinson was the first to exit the water and gradually built up a larger gap over his chasers, especially his fellow countryman, the current Ironman world champion, and the winner of the past three editions of this race, Pete Jacobs. The Orbea-sponsored triathlete was the fastest on the bike, completing the 90km leg in a blistering time of 2 hours and 12 minutes only. In the footrace, the Aussie showed he is in great shape. He controlled his advantage to cross the finish line first, in 3 hours, 58 minutes and 7 seconds, 1 minute ahead of Jacobs and ending his rival’s winning streak in the Philippines.
