Catharine Pendrel retains Canadian cyclocross title

2014-10-26

Luna teammate Maghalie Rochette finished second in a race they dominated throughout.

The Canadian Cyclocross Championships have some rightful rulers: Luna Pro Team. Catharine Pendrel lifted the Canadian title after winning a race she dominated right from the gun. Teammate Maghalie Rochette did not leave Catharine alone on the podium, with Sandra Walter, who had fought for second, coming in third.

Catharine Pendrel had arrived in Winnipeg as the defending champion and favourite. Climbing atop the podium, the reigning Elite Women’s World Champion lived to everybody’s expectations.

The day was really cold in Winnipeg – the coldest city in the world – even with the sun shining brightly in the sky. Early in the race, Pendrel took the lead with Rochette, followed closely by 2012 champion Mical Dyck, who left Rochette and Walter the battle for third.

On lap two, Pendrel and Dyck opened up a gap over the chasers. It looked like victory would be decided between them, but Dyck had a crash and hit the dust, leaving Pendrel alone to defend her title. Catharine grabbed her chance and broke away in no time. Rochette was back to second and managed to keep this spot until the end, despite Walter’s attempts to overpower her.

Well done, ladies!
