Matt Sharp finishes 15th at World Triathlon Series in Auckland

2014-04-06

The member of Orbea Orca Triathlon Team finished within the top 20 in the opening round of the ITU World Triathlon Series.

Matt Sharp of UK got a good 15th place in the first round of the ITU World Triathlon Series, held in Auckland, New Zealand.

The race gathered the elite of the international triathlon scene. Spain’s Javier Gómez Noya continued his undefeated run in Auckland by winning in 2012, 2013 and 2014.

Gómez Noya and Jonathan Brownlee, who was the runner-up, were among the leaders out of the water, but the first man to leave T1 was Russian triathlete Dmitry Polyansky.

In a highly contested bike leg, a 15-strong pack arrived at T2 with a 2-minute lead on their rivals. However, early in the run, Gómez Noya and Brownlee broke away and kept their gap until the final stretch. With 2km remaining, Noya made a winning effort to beat Brownlee by 20 seconds.

Sharp did a god job. He finished within the top 20 in 1:57: 15. Bad news from Tamara Gómez, who dropped out after T1 because she was not feeling well.
