Matt Sharp, tenth in European Triathlon Championships

2014-06-21

The British triathlete made it to the top ten of this leading triathlon race, closing the gap on his rivals in a fantastic bike leg.

Matt Sharp did a great job at the European Triathlon Championships, crossing the finish line behind nine other triathletes only. It was a great result indeed, in one of the toughest triathlons taking place in Europe.

The race unfolded in the little Austrian village of Kitzbühel. Russia’s Dmitry Polyansky was the first to emerge from Schwarzsee Lake. He was closely followed by Alistair Brownlee, who ended up lifting the European trophy. Matt came out 21 seconds back, joining the leading pack after T1.

Flying on his Orbea bike, Sharp showed why he is among the strongest cyclists of the European triathlon pack, narrowing down the gap on his competitors. He then kept his pace in the footrace, thus managing to edge his way into the top ten. It was no easy task, for he fought head to head against Lukas Hollaus from Austria and Justus Nieschlag from Germany.

Gold went to compatriot Alistair Brownlee, who put on a great show – once again. Dmitry Polyansky and Spaniard Vicente Hernández, second and third, rounded out the podium.

Congratulations, Matt!
