Andrew Starykowicz hopes to break bike split record at Ironman Hawaii!

2014-10-09

The big day is here. It will be his second time at Kona, and ‘Starky’ is determined to fight for a new record. His Ordu Special Edition is his best weapon

‘I want to win the race and be the first off the bike.’ The triathlete of Orbea Orca Triathlon Team can boast of being ambitious. He wants to win it all and set new records as well. Andrew has set sight on what Orbea calls #assaultkona, that is, smashing the bike split record of Ironman Hawaii (4:18:23), hit by retired triathlete from Germany Normann Stadler in 2006.

Andrew Starykowicz is ready to do better than the record holder, especially if the weather on the island is as fine as it has been these past days. ‘In good weather without wind, I can do it in 4:05. I believe I can finish in 4:13, but my big goal is to finish a second ahead of the runner-up,’ the American triathlete told Ironman legend Bob Babbitt in Breakfast from Kona.

To achieve his goal, Andrew will use a clear strategy: riding even faster on his Orbea Ordu Andrew Starykowicz Special Edition: ‘If my bike is fast enough, I can finish the run in a little over 3 hours and still win the race. If I rode a little slower, I could run a little faster. I think I can run a lot faster but I’ll have a better chance to win if I ride faster and run slower.’

Åsa wants to shine too

Sweden’s Åsa Lundström is coming to Hawaii ready to enjoy her first time in an Ironman World Championship. She got her ticket to Kona with a third spot at Ironman Cairns, held in June.

‘I’m so happy for this chance I have to be in Hawaii. The best long-distance triathletes will gather in a single place: the wet, the heat, Ali’i Drive in Kona…’

The Ironman World Championship in Hawaii is taking place this Saturday 11 October. It consists of 4km swim, 180km bike and 42.195km marathon. Once the event is over, one of the many participants will lift the IRONMAN title. To watch all the live action, please click here.
