Orbea bets on Bilbao Triathlon again next year!

We are announcing the first of many surprises for Bilbao Triathlon: Courtney Atkinson and Jenny Schulz will plunge into the river on 24 May along with hundreds of triathletes. They will face the wind, the cold and the tough course. And they are determined

Orbea will be present in the 2014 Bilbao Triathlon – and in the best possible way. Courtney Atkinson, top 20 in the Beijing and London Olympic Games, and Jenny Schulz, on the podium at the Duathlon World Championships and two-time German champion, have announced they will compete next year in Bilbao.

The two top figures in the tri world are coming to the capital of Vizcaya thanks to Orbea – for they are members of Orbea Orca Triathlon Team. This confirms our commitment to this race that, despite having been held only three times, has become a major international event in the triathlon community. So much so that in the first 24 hours after the registration opened on Thursday, 12 December, there were already more than 200 people registered.

Excited to compete in Bilbao

Courtney Atkinson will come to Bilbao to prepare for the 2014 Ironman Hawaii, determined to fight for victory: ‘I watched the past edition and they said the atmosphere was incredible, so I can’t wait to come to Bilbao. I was second three times in the ITU World Triathlon Series Madrid. The Casa de Campo was awesome; I’m sure something similar happens in Bilbao.’

Jenny Schulz told us she is ‘excited’ to compete in Bilbao: ‘I’ve heard a lot about this town and only knowing I’ll go there makes me happy. In terms of sports, I’ll surely fight to win Bilbao Triathlon, as it’ll be the first big step I’ll take before my first long-distance race in 2014.’

Atkinson and Schulz are thus taking the relay from Andrew Starykowicz, Albert Moreno and Åsa Lundström, who in the 2013 race embodied Orbea Orca Triathlon Team’s strong bet on Bilbao Triathlon: ‘Ordurykowicz landed sixth despite his stomach issues, Albert was fifth and Åsa climbed atop the podium on a day marked by terrible weather.
