Andrew Starykowicz: The Revenant

2017-04-22

The Orbea triathlete, who returned to competition in the Texas Ironman only 8 short months after being hit by a truck, once again managed the best time on the bicycle in the history of the Ironman (4 h 1’ 14’’).

There are no words to describe what Andrew Starykowicz has accomplished in the Texas Ironman 2017. The mere act of returning to competition only 8 months after the serious accident he suffered while training deserves all our admiration, but doing so and beating the Ironman cycling record for the third time in his career is a superhuman feat…earning him the nickname "The Revenant". What a way to make a comeback!

Andrew flew by on his Ordu like never before (or like always), and set the new time to beat at 4 h 1’ 14’’. Many already think that the Chicago triathlete could be the first rider in history to break the 4 hour barrier in the cycling stage of an Ironman competition.

On his long road to recovery, there has been one phrase Andrew kept repeating: “It’s not about how hard or how far you get knocked down, it’s about how high you rise when you get back up.”

With his performance today, Andrew has demonstrated what he is capable of and has earned the applause and admiration of the entire triathlon community (Jan Frodeno himself was one of the first to congratulate him by Twitter): Congratulations, Andrew!

The Texas Ironman ended with the victory of American Matt Hanson, who also recorded a spectacular time:  7h 52’:44’’. Andrew managed to finish the Ironman in the Top 20
